It’s hard for me to accurately put this into words, but I really don’t know where my present day musical tastes would be had I not picked up a Cap’n Jazz record. The ironic thing is, I went to the same high school as most of these guys, yet the only exposure I had to them was seeing them perform at a couple of high school sponsored variety shows, and the whole experience admittedly went right over my head.
It wasn’t until the summer after high school that really latched onto it, and really opened the doors to basically all the music that shaped my late teens and early to middle 20′s. There is no record that I hold more sentimental value to than this one, and if you knew how much I loved a few other records of mine, that statement would blow your friggin’ mind.
That all came to a head last Friday when I got to see Cap’n Jazz reunite at the Empty Bottle for a short, 4 song set, part of a Joan of Arc curated show for their latest record, Don’t Mind Control.
Everyone has their own desert island record, and the sentiment of this one is enough for me to make it mine. Although I don’t listen to them nearly as much as I used to, every time I hear the beginning of the song Little League, it’s like hearing it for the first time. Sounds cheesy, I know, but it was the right record at the right time, and seeing them play this weekend was something that made me extremely happy.
Here it was (sound quality not so great, i know) …

So sad I wasn’t at this show…
it was really fantastic, and hopefully they decide to play a show where they do a full set. that remains to be seen.
however, there is always the gauge reunion at bottom lounge on march 6th!
